REVIEW: The Devil's Pawn by Elizabeth Finn

The Devil's PawnThe Devil's Pawn by Elizabeth Finn
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I really have no words for this book...

I...

Yeah. Generally, her books are pretty good. But this one was just... disturbing? I don't know what word to use!

//

When the lead male character all but rapes her at the beginning to "rid her of that pesky virginity" so that she can then become basically a prostitute.... I almost called it quits right then. And then when he proceeded to not let her find 'satisfaction' shall we say? - WTF?

//

On top of everything, he supposedly loves her so very much, but he allows another man to 'purchase her services' and then WATCHES WHILE SHE SERVICES SAID MAN!!!

//

I just... OMG! I can't...

UGH!

SUMMARY:

Ryan Cosgrove and Liliana Delgado are on a collision course with destiny. They don’t know it yet, but before the night is over their lives will be forever changed.

Spending Valentine’s Day at a burlesque bar, hadn’t been Liliana’s ideal way of spending a Friday night. She’d much rather be back on campus doing homework… until she meets Ryan. Tall, athletic, and gorgeous, Lili can’t keep her eyes off him, and despite his gruff manners and drunken disposition she’s intrigued.

Ryan’s got demons, and they’re deep, dark, and eating him alive. Regardless of his attraction to the petite brunette he’s tired of fighting, of pretending the last fifteen years haven’t been a daily struggle just to get out of bed every morning. That night he decides to end his pain, to leave it all behind and float away into the blessed darkness of oblivion.

But fate has other plans for him, Lily finds and rescues Ryan, determined she’ll not only save his body, but his soul too. This is their moment…

REVIEW:

I can honestly say that this book was not what I was expecting. Ryan has demons... Whoa boy! - does he have demons. And they are one hell of a way for him to first meet Liliana and they make one hell of an impression. It's best to be warned that if sexual abuse of any kind affects you, then this is not the story for you to read. But if you can get past that, then this is an amazingly well-told piece of fiction that had me deeply effected.

The fact that this man, this amazing, beautiful man is able to pick up and with Liliana's help move on is astounding. And that he is able to accept her and her own past is every bit as amazing. These two people are compassionate and caring to others, but painful to themselves and you get wrapped up into them and pray for a Happily Ever After. Be warned, there are scenes that are misleading and throw you off, however.
